Royal Holloway is awarded Bronze accreditation for Carbon Literate Education.

The accreditation, awarded by The Carbon Literacy Project, celebrates institutions that actively promote understanding of carbon emissions and empower their communities to make sustainable choices. It reflects Royal Holloway’s growing commitment to tackling climate change through education, training, and cultural transformation.

Since launching Carbon Literacy Training in 2021, the university has trained over 230 students, staff, and external partners. These sessions, held at least twice a year, offer a day’s worth of learning focused on the environmental impact of daily activities and how individuals and organisations can reduce their carbon footprint.

Professor Sigrun Wagner, who specialises in International Business and Sustainability, introduced the training program at the University in 2021 with colleagues from the Department of Drama, Theatre and Dance. This initiative now enjoys broad support from faculty across the University, including staff from the University’s library.

Professor Wagner said: "Becoming a Bronze Carbon Literate Educator is an important milestone for Royal Holloway. It shows our dedication to empowering our community to be sustainability champions.

“This training gives people the knowledge and confidence to make greener choices – both in their personal lives and in their careers."

Carbon Literacy is defined as an awareness of the carbon costs of everyday actions, along with the motivation to reduce emissions. The educator accreditation is tiered – Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum – each level requiring deeper commitment to climate action and fostering a low-carbon culture.

Dave Coleman, Co-Founder and Managing Director of The Carbon Literacy Project, praised the university’s efforts: "Carbon Literacy is a vital skill for students entering today’s workforce. Royal Holloway’s Bronze accreditation shows it’s not just educating – it’s leading by example and helping drive a cultural shift toward a low-carbon future."

With this recognition, Royal Holloway joins a growing network of institutions working to build a more sustainable world, empowering one informed learner at a time.
