Leaving a legacy of social justice? Donor perceptions and bequest decisions in higher education institutions

This proposal investigates the complex interplay between philanthropy, higher education institutions (HEIs), and social justice, focusing on legacy giving. HEIs have fostered access and inclusion with initiatives funded largely through philanthropic gifts from alumni. Legacies are a primary source of such revenue. Worth £96 million to HEIs in 2020/21, legacies are predicted to grow significantly with the passing of the ‘Baby Boomer’ generation.
However, legacies are the most unequally distributed form of philanthropic support for HEIs and charities: the forthcoming large-scale inter-generational transfer of wealth may, therefore, magnify existing inequities. How legacy donors navigate this tension and understand and consider social justice issues is, therefore, timely and of significant impact for HEIs.
This research will explore whether alumni legacy donors consider or are aware of the social justice implications inherent in their bequest decisions. It seeks to illuminate the motivations behind alumni legacy giving, exploring whether and how these decisions contribute to or challenge the principles of social justice in HEIs.
The research plan comprises a literature review, secondary analysis of bequests to HEIs in England, and c.50 semi-structured interviews with legacy pledgers and development professionals. Placement with a leading consultancy will support continuous engagement with practitioners.
The proposal contributes to the academic literature on philanthropy and social justice, specifically donor legacy giving to HEIs. Practically, the findings will inform legacy fundraising in HEIs and seek to increase collaboration between practitioners. It aims to help increase funding for initiatives focused on redressing social injustice.
