Breaking the Cycle of Learned Helplessness: Investigating the Impact of Self-Compassion and
Compassion-Focused Therapy in Spinal Cord Injury Patients

This project addresses a critical yet underexplored challenge: the cycle of learned helplessness (LH) in
people living with Spinal Cord Injury (PLwSCI). SCI not only impairs physical abilities but also profoundly
affects psychological and emotional well-being, as many PLwSCI cycle through shock, denial, and despair,
struggling to find meaning in their new realities, often leading to LH— a state of psychological despair
that undermines rehabilitation, independence, and quality of life.
The project will focus on the intersection of emotional resilience and recovery, employing a mixedmethods
approach encompassing qualitative exploration, a feasibility study, and a small-scale
randomized controlled trial. Principally, this project will focus on developing a self-compassion
intervention specifically tailored for PLwSCI as outpatients in the community. Self-compassion, which
involves treating oneself with kindness, recognizing shared humanity, and maintaining mindfulness in
times of struggle, is crucial for psychological well-being and resilience, particularly for individuals facing
significant life challenges. By cultivating self-compassion, self-kindness and fostering emotional
regulation, this project aims to reduce LH, enhance mental health, and promote rehabilitation
engagement.
Designed to be scalable and culturally adaptable, the proposed intervention has significant potential for
broader applications in other chronic conditions, particularly in low-resource settings. Empowering
individuals to reclaim their autonomy and purpose, it will contribute to healthier, more inclusive
communities- aligning with SEDarc’s theme of “Healthy thriving communities”. Beyond immediate
impacts, it aims to build systems of care rooted in compassion, offering hope and healing to anunderserved population. This pioneering approach highlights emotional well-being as essential for
thriving communities.
