Understanding the Lived Experiences of Black Midwives in England: Racialisation, Racism, and the Impact on Professional Development

This research delves into the lived experiences of Black midwives in England, highlighting how racialisation, racism, and systemic inequities shape their professional lives and well-being. Despite the NHS's commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion, Black midwives face significant barriers rooted in institutional biases and structural racism. Through a mixed-methods approach, this study combines a national survey of 1000 Black midwives with in-depth interviews and focus groups to capture their personal narratives and professional challenges. The survey will measure experiences of racism, professional development, and mental health, while also assessing awareness and perceptions of the pan-London Capital Midwives Anti-Racism Framework. By focusing on the lived experiences of these midwives, this research aims to provide a nuanced understanding of their struggles and successes, offering evidence-based recommendations for creating more inclusive and supportive work environments. The anticipated outcomes include policy reforms, enhanced professional development and retention strategies, and a best practice guide for NHS Trusts.
