Dr Anna Stanisz-Lubowiecka studies the relationship between language and politics. In her ESRC (SEDarc) Postdoctoral Fellowship project, entitled Language for and against Democracy: Ideologies and Metalinguistic Discourse in Poland and Beyond, Anna focuses on maximising the impact of her doctoral research into the role of language ideologies in supporting and challenging democratic regimes. In particular, she is working on a monograph, based on her PhD thesis entitled The Polish Language and Political Ideologies. Language Ideologies in Polish Professional Metalinguistic Discourse since 1970, which she is going to publish with Routledge. During the Fellowship, Anna is also further developing her current research and disseminating it to academic and non-academic audiences.

 

Anna completed her PhD at University College London, School of Slavonic and East European Studies in July 2024. She has been awarded numerous scholarships, including AHRC (CEELBAS DTP) Doctoral Studentship (2018–2023), SSEES Excellence Scholarship (2022), and Scholarship of the Minister of Science and Higher Education of Poland (2015). In 2023, Anna co-founded the British Association of Applied Linguistics Language Policy Special Interest Group reading group, which she has moderated since. She has acted as British Association for Slavonic and East European Studies Head of Languages and Linguistics stream since 2023. Anna has published her research in many articles and book chapters, notably in Journal of Language and Politics, peer-reviewed journal articles, and presented her work at multiple conferences, talks, and lectures, including the Applied Linguistics Research Circle at the University of Reading Department of English Language and Applied Linguistics, PROLang (Policy, Research, Outreach) Research Group (UCL SSEES), and Language, Ideology and Power Research Group at the Department of Linguistics and English Language (University of Lancaster). In April 2024, Anna was nominated for University of Reading Teaching Excellence Award. Beyond academia, Anna is a poetry translator.
